THE DOJO KUN
THE DOJO KUN The Dojo Kun is a set of precepts that contain the fundamental elements of karate training. It is said to have originated with an Okinawan martial artist known as Karate Sakugawa (1733-1815). They state the following maxims: 1. Seek perfection of character 2. Be faithful 3. Endeavor 4. Respect others 5. Refrain from violent behavior “Seek Perfection of Character” indicates that the art is more than just physical. Through rigorous training, the spirit to succeed and never give up will be developed. “To Be Faithful” alludes to the fact that the student must always remain true to not only their teachers and training, but also to themselves. The “Endeavour” mentioned in the Dojo Kun refers to the complete dedication necessary to achieve mastery of the art. In no case is mastery possible without strenuous effort on the part of the practitioner. “Respect for Others” reinforces the fact that martial arts begins and ends with respect. This is what separates classical martial arts from simply learning how to fight. Students show respect for each other by bowing and do the same to show respect for the Instructors. The Instructors show respect for the students by bowing to them. “Refrain From Violent Behavior” means that every martial arts student must do their utmost to never use their skills to harms others. The goal of karate is selfmastery. This means that a student never finds themselves in a position were they must use their skills unless they are threatened by death or grievous bodily harm.

The students are not free to stop and start as they like, but to train continuously. ? A lower ranked student is encouraged to ask a higher ranked student for help and assistance during FREE time, before or after class, not while the Instructors are teaching. ? Sitting in the dojo is only done when asked to do so and not when one feels compelled to do so. When the Instructor is teaching, always show respect by standing in a “ready” or “focused” position. ? When entering the dojo, asking questions of your Instructor, or beginning and ending working with a partner, the karate student bows to show proper respect and courtesy. ?
